If you thought I was exaggerating in yesterday’s post when I criticised church plants and said “a maintenance church may resist change that will further the mission”, you should read this story of a successful pastor who tried to ‘go missional’, in Stories from the Revolution.
Shaun King had successfully developed a church plant into a “super cool Sunday worship-service-centered church with 700 people” in just three years, but when he tried to change to a stronger mission focus, he met such resistance that he resigned.
The story concludes:
“the building-centered, Sunday big worship-service-centered “experience” …. is a great way to entertain people but an inefficient way to make disciples. Not only that, but it takes a terrible toll on the pastors and on their families.”
